The Serengeti is Tanzania's most famous park: nearly 15,000 square kilometres of golden grassland, rocky kopjes and acacia woodland. It is home to one of Africa's densest lion populations and the stage for the Great Migration, when well over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra move in a year-round circle following the rains.
Central Serengeti around Seronera offers excellent game viewing in every season, with lions, leopards and cheetahs regularly seen along the river valleys. From December to March the herds gather in the southern plains to calve, drawing predators close. Between July and October the migration pushes north towards the Mara River, where the dramatic crossings take place.
