No technical skills are needed, but good fitness and the right mindset make a big difference.
Kilimanjaro is a trek, not a technical climb. Anyone in reasonable health can attempt it, but the effort of long days at altitude should not be underestimated.
Build walking fitness
Stair climbing and hill walks are the best training for Kilimanjaro
Walk or hike regularly for 2–3 months before the climb
Include long days of 4–6 hours on hilly terrain
Train in the boots you will wear on the mountain
Add stair climbing, cycling or swimming for stamina
Choose a longer route
The single best way to improve your chance of summiting is to spend more days on the mountain. Seven or eight days allows your body to adjust gradually.
Break in your boots on long hikes before the climb
Health check
Visit your doctor before booking, especially if you have heart or lung conditions, and ask about altitude medication and vaccinations.
A health check before you travel is always a good idea
