Discover Ngorongoro
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera, around 20 kilometres across with walls rising some 600 metres. Its floor holds grassland, a soda lake, swamps and forest, supporting a remarkable concentration of wildlife in a single day's drive.
Part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino. Large-tusked elephants, lions, hyenas and flamingos are all commonly seen. Maasai pastoralists continue to live in the wider conservation area alongside the wildlife.
Wildlife & sights
- Descent to the crater floor at first light
