Route Overview
About the Umbwe Route
The shortest and steepest way up, best suited to fit, experienced hikers who acclimatise well.
Umbwe climbs sharply through the forest along narrow ridges before joining the southern circuit at Barranco. It is quiet and dramatic, but the fast gain in altitude makes acclimatisation harder. We usually recommend it only to experienced trekkers.
Why choose it
- Very quiet
- Dramatic ridge walking
Keep in mind
- Steep with fast altitude gain
- Not ideal for first-time high-altitude trekkers
