Itinerary
You are collected in the morning from Arusha or Moshi and driven through lovely scenery to Marangu Gate to complete registration and permits. The trek begins in thick rainforest alive with birds, monkeys and unusual plants.
Day one of the trek also eases you into the Kilimanjaro setting of the Marangu Route with a gentle ascent. You sleep comfortably at Mandara Hut, with dinner prepared by the Ceraa Eyes Safari trekking team.
After breakfast, you continue trekking across moorland and heath, with wide scenery and views of the mountain. Your guides also talk you through the wildlife, geology and ecosystem of Kilimanjaro as you go.
Height is gained steadily along the Marangu Route Kilimanjaro trail, letting your body adjust well before you arrive at Horombo Hut, where you can take in the alpine desert scenery and sleep.
Set aside a whole day to acclimatize, with a short walk up to Zebra Rocks and the ridges around them. It boosts your chances of making the summit and gives your body time to settle at altitude.
Our Marangu Route Kilimanjaro itinerary prioritises safety and slow adaptation to altitude, with experienced guides checking how you feel and coaching you towards a successful summit bid.
After breakfast you trek across alpine desert towards Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt. The higher you go, the more dramatic the surroundings become, with volcanic rock formations and high-altitude views.
This part of the Marangu Route Kilimanjaro climb readies you in body and mind for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak. Dinner is followed by an early night before the summit push.
At midnight, beneath the stars, the summit push begins. You climb first over steep scree and rocky ground, then arrive at Uhuru Peak for sunrise and sweeping views across Africa.
Once you have celebrated, walk down to Kibo Hut, then continue to Horombo Hut for the night.
