See the dramatic Ndutu Calving Season and Great Migration during this 6-day Tanzania safari. It is built for guests wanting plenty of days in the Southern Serengeti.hern Serengeti, allowing you to follow the migration and see wildlife gather in remarkable numbers at calving time.

Four nights are spent in the Serengeti, with a number of full-day game drives around Ndutu and throughout the broader Southern Serengeti, in search of huge wildebeest herds, newborn calves, zebras and gazelles. Predators trailing the migration, including lions, cheetahs and spotted hyenas, are also on your radar. The Serengeti also suits birdwatchers and wildlife photographers superbly.

Ngorongoro Highlands and Crater

On Day 5, you leave the Serengeti and explore the lovely Ngorongoro Highlands before heading to Inoga Lodge for the night. On the last day you go down into the Ngorongoro Crater for a memorable game drive and then return to Arusha.

The safari therefore brings together the Wildebeest Migration Tours in Tanzania and Kenya, the Ndutu calving season and Southern Serengeti animals, and then adds the Ngorongoro Highlands and Ngorongoro Crater, every part neatly arranged into a single Tanzania safari.

Itinerary

The safari opens with an early morning collection at your Arusha hotel. After meeting your professional safari guide, you drive towards the Southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area. Along this scenic route through northern Tanzania, farmland slowly gives way to the Serengeti's broad plains.

Approaching the Southern Serengeti, your first game drive gets under way. In calving season, huge numbers of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles gather here, and your guide looks for the migration as well as predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas. You carry on to Serengeti Classic View for dinner and the night.

After an early breakfast, spend the whole day on game drives around the Ndutu area.

Here lies the heart of your Great Migration experience. During calving season the short-grass plains turn into a nursery for wildebeest, letting you witness mothers giving birth, newborn calves wobbling through their first steps and enormous herds spreading across the plains.

The many young animals draw predators too, so you have excellent chances of spotting wildebeest and their newborn calves, zebras, gazelles and lions. Keep watch as well for elephants, giraffes, ostriches and other birds.

You then have a picnic lunch out in the wilderness ahead of the afternoon game drive, before heading back to Serengeti Classic View for dinner and the night.

Rise early for a second full day around Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti. An extra day in the migration area gives you longer to follow the herds and visit different habitats, and the morning brings lovely light and busy wildlife that make for great photographs.

Your guide keeps track of wildlife movements and looks for predator activity around the migration, so you might meet lion prides, cheetahs, hyenas and other carnivores trailing the herds. A picnic lunch is followed by an afternoon game drive over the plains, seasonal lakes and nearby areas. You then return to Serengeti Classic View for dinner and the night.

Following breakfast, you have another full day in the Serengeti. Rather than leaving the park, you devote the whole day to more wildlife viewing, which gives you extra time in the areas where the migration and predators are currently active. Your guide picks the best spots using recent sightings and herd movements.

Through the day you could spot big herds of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, elephants, giraffes and buffaloes, with predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas possibly close by. Birdwatchers will find raptors, vultures, ostriches, storks and bright savanna species across the Serengeti.

Around midday, you picnic during the game drive and carry on exploring through the afternoon. Afterwards, you go back to Serengeti Classic View for your fourth and last night in the Serengeti.

Once breakfast is over, a last morning game drive takes you out of the Serengeti. The road then leads on towards the Ngorongoro Highlands, where the scenery shifts dramatically from open plains to green hills, forests and farmland.

Today belongs to the beautiful Ngorongoro Highlands. Depending on the activity you choose, you may visit a local community or take a nature walk, explore the highland scenery or learn about traditional life in the area. Afterwards you drive to Inoga Lodge in the Karatu area, where you check in, relax and have dinner.

Following an early breakfast you head to the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater and go down for a morning game drive over its floor. Thanks to the extraordinary wildlife density, it is a superb way to finish your safari.

Watch for lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and gazelles, and with some luck the endangered black rhinoceros. Enjoy a picnic lunch down in the crater, then climb out and drive back to Arusha. You get there in the late afternoon or evening, where you say farewell to your safari guide.
