See the Great Wildebeest Migration at the height of the calving season on this exclusive 6-day luxury safari, which brings together superb wildlife, beautiful scenery and carefully chosen luxury accommodation.

The trip starts in Arusha and heads straight into a game drive in Tarangire National Park. A restful stay at the elegant Gibb’s Farm in the Ngorongoro highlands comes next, followed by a visit to the remarkable Ngorongoro Crater. From there you travel on to Ndutu and spend four nights at Lemala Ndutu Camp, which leaves plenty of time to follow the migration at an easy pace.

The Ndutu calving season is the core of this safari, when huge herds of wildebeest gather on the short-grass plains to give birth. Over several days you follow the herds, watching newborn calves, wildebeest births and dramatic predator action. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other wildlife may also appear along the way.

You also get a private 4x4 safari vehicle, an experienced guide and luxury tented accommodation, so this itinerary gives you an intimate, unhurried way to witness one of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacles.

Itinerary

A morning collection in Arusha begins the luxury safari, followed by a scenic drive to Tarangire National Park, where a whole day of game drives awaits in a park famous for old baobab trees, big elephant herds and diverse animals. Your guide covers several areas in search of elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest and others.

You enjoy a picnic lunch in the park and carry on towards the Ngorongoro Highlands, reaching Gibb’s Farm in the late afternoon. Settle into your luxury cottage, then soak up the calm gardens and lovely views.

Overnight: Gibb's Farm
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

After an early breakfast, you depart Gibb’s Farm for the Ngorongoro Crater. Descending inside, you enjoy a spectacular game drive across the crater floor, with strong prospects of spotting lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and, with a bit of luck, black rhinos.

A picnic lunch in the crater comes next, before you drive up and on towards Ndutu. Nearing the southern Serengeti, the scenery opens into the short-grass plains where wildebeest gather in calving season.

During the afternoon you reach Lemala Ndutu Camp and move into your luxury tent. Depending on when you arrive and what the wildlife is doing, a short first game drive may be possible, and dinner back at camp follows.

Overnight: Lemala Ndutu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

An early start begins your first full day among the plains of Ndutu where calving takes place. At peak calving season, enormous numbers of wildebeest congregate on the short-grass plains to drop their young, and you spend the day following the herds in search of mothers with newborn calves, herds of zebra and other wildlife.

Predators are drawn to the many newborn animals, so lions, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals may be seen hunting or moving among the herds. At midday you eat a picnic lunch out in the wilderness, then keep exploring through the afternoon while your guide adjusts the route to the latest wildlife movements.

In the evening you head back to Lemala Ndutu Camp for dinner and an easy spell beside the campfire.

Overnight: Lemala Ndutu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After your morning meal, another whole day of wildlife watching awaits around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti. Rather than sticking to a fixed route, you trail the migration itself, hunting for big gatherings of zebra, wildebeest and newborn calves, and watching for the predators that shadow them.

Your experienced guide draws on local knowledge and the latest wildlife movements to find the best viewing and photo spots. After a picnic lunch in the bush your afternoon game drive continues, and in the evening you go back to Lemala Ndutu Camp.

Overnight: Lemala Ndutu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Another outstanding day in Ndutu awaits, giving you more unhurried time with the calving season. Following an early breakfast, you venture further into the plains looking for wildlife. Depending on the day's movements, you could find large wildebeest gatherings, newborn calves, zebra, gazelles and some of the area’s resident predators.

Calving season is especially thrilling, as so many newborn animals set up tense moments between predator and prey. You watch these scenes unfold while your guide parks the vehicle for the best views and photographs. A picnic lunch is followed by your afternoon safari. At the end of the day you go back to Lemala Ndutu Camp for your final night under the African sky.

Overnight: Lemala Ndutu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Rise early for the last morning game drive in Ndutu. The cooler hours of the morning give you a final opportunity to look for predators, wildebeest herds and newborn calves before you leave the migration plains behind.

When the game drive is over, you start the journey back to Arusha. You have lunch on the way and watch the scenery of northern Tanzania change, arriving in Arusha in the late afternoon or evening. Your 6-Day Ultimate Luxury Ndutu Safari – The Great Migration Calving Season Experience finishes here.
