See the Ndutu Great Migration and Calving Season at its most dramatic on this 5-day Tanzania safari, created for those hoping to see new-born wildebeest, huge herds and gripping predator action across the Southern Serengeti.
Your stay opens with three nights at Serengeti Classic View, leaving plenty of time to explore Ndutu and track the migration on full-day game drives. Watch for wildebeest mother wildebeest alongside their calves, as well as cheetahs, lions, hyenas, gazelles, zebras and abundant birdlife.
On Day 4 you leave the Serengeti and cross the lovely Ngorongoro Highlands to spend the night at Inoga Lodge. On Day 5 the safari closes with a game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, after which you return to Arusha.
Itinerary
From your hotel in Arusha, an early pickup brings you together with your professional safari guide, and you then set out for the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu.
On the approach to the Serengeti, the terrain broadens into open grassland, acacia woods and seasonal marshes. Your first game drive starts en route to the Ndutu region, searching for wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and more. If it is calving season, you could already spot big herds with newborn calves, and lions, cheetahs and hyenas frequently stalking along beside the migration.
From there you go on to Serengeti Classic View for dinner and your overnight stay.
Accommodation: Serengeti Classic View
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Following an early breakfast, a full day of game drives across the Ndutu plains awaits, the centrepiece of your safari. During calving season, thousands of wildebeest congregate to give birth, producing one of the most remarkable wildlife sights in Tanzania (NCAA).
All day long you look for newborn calves, mothers with their young, giant wildebeest herds, zebras and gazelles. With so many newborns around, predators are never far, which gives you good chances to look for:
- Wildebeest with their newborn calves
- Zebras and gazelles
- Lions and lion prides
- Plus cheetahs, spotted hyenas and jackals
- Elephants and giraffes
- And lastly, ostriches and other birdlife
You eat a picnic lunch out in the wild around midday, and the afternoon game drive then carries on. After that, you head back to Serengeti Classic View for dinner and your overnight stay.
Accommodation: Serengeti Classic View
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Following breakfast, you spend another full day watching wildlife in the Ndutu and Southern Serengeti ecosystem. Your guide tracks where the migration currently is, and you also visit other stretches of plain, seasonal lakes and nearby habitats.
This is a great day for wildlife photography and observing natural behaviour. Watch for wildebeest mothers with their calves, large herds of zebra, gazelles and predators shadowing the migration. Birdwatchers are also well rewarded, since the Ndutu wetlands, lakes, grasslands and woodland support plentiful birdlife (NCAA).
Lunch is a picnic before the afternoon game drive. You then head back to Serengeti Classic View for your final night in the Serengeti.
Accommodation: Serengeti Classic View
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Following breakfast you take a last morning game drive in the Serengeti, then leave the migration area behind. The road heads for the Ngorongoro Highlands, and the scenery shifts from open plains to green hills.
The activity you choose could be a cultural visit, a nature walk or another highland experience, letting you learn more about the landscapes and local communities around the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Afterwards you travel to Inoga Lodge in Karatu for dinner and your overnight stay.
Accommodation: Inoga Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Following an early breakfast, you drive to Ngorongoro Crater for your last wildlife experience. You drop down to the crater floor for a game drive that may reveal lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and gazelles. With luck, the endangered black rhinoceros will show itself as well (NCAA).
Having enjoyed a picnic lunch in the crater, you climb back out and start the journey to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon or evening to complete your 5-Day Ndutu Great Migration Safari.
