Itinerary
The Mount Meru trip begins when you are collected from your Arusha hotel in the morning and driven scenically to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. With registration complete, you begin your trek through lush forest.
On the trail you may come across giraffes, buffalo and many species of birds. The fairly moderate walk to Miriakamba Hut takes around 4 to 5 hours and passes the park's unusual plants and animals. At Miriakamba Hut you rest and acclimatize ahead of the tougher climb tomorrow.
A hearty breakfast sets you up for the climb to Saddle Hut, an alpine setting with striking views of Mount Meru's craters. The walk lasts roughly 4 to 5 hours, with the scenery moving from forest through alpine meadow to rocky ground.
The views grow more dramatic the higher you go, and Kilimanjaro appears in the distance. Saddle Hut then offers fine views of the crater and the valleys below, making it an ideal spot to rest and acclimatise. You settle in and prepare for the summit attempt, which starts around midnight.
The final day begins early, around 10:00 PM, so you can stand on the summit at sunrise. The ascent is demanding but richly rewarding, taking you over rugged terrain, volcanic ash and rocky ridgelines, while the craters around you glow in the early light.
A panorama opens from the summit across the Serengeti Plains and Ngorongoro Crater, with Mount Kilimanjaro far off. After soaking it in, you begin the descent, going first to Saddle Hut for a brief rest and then on to Miriakamba Hut.
From there you make the last descent to Momella Gate, after roughly 10-12 hours on the go in total. Once the climb is over, a driver from Ceraa Eyes Safari Company takes you back to Arusha, where you can rest and reflect on your achievement.

Frequent Asked Question
Mount Meru is a moderate challenge and easier than Kilimanjaro. Even so, it has steep climbs and a final summit push, so good fitness and sensible acclimatisation matter.
You do not need previous experience, but you should be physically fit and happy with long hikes at high altitude.
Travel during the dry seasons for the best results: January to early March and June to October.
Yes. It happens less often than on Kilimanjaro, but altitude sickness is still possible. The itinerary builds in time to acclimatize, and your guide checks on your health throughout the climb.
