Reasons to book this 7 Days Kilimanjaro Shared Group Experience with us

Each 7-Day Kilimanjaro Joining Group Tour we organise is tailor-made, which means the dates, accommodation and pace can all be changed to suit you. Our local team also looks after you from the moment you arrive until you leave. Ahead of your trip, you can read about the area on the official Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) website, and for further inspiration take a look at our other Kilimanjaro National Park tours.

Take on the 7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via the Machame Route, the most popular and scenic trail up the highest mountain in Africa, also known as the Whiskey Route. An extra acclimatization day is built into this itinerary, which gives you a better chance of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) while you enjoy one of the world's great trekking experiences.

Reasons to choose the Machame Route

The Machame Route: The Whiskey Trail up Kilimanjaro is renowned for spectacular scenery, an excellent acclimatisation profile and varied ecological zones. Crossing Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, you hike through lush rainforest, giant heather and moorland, then traverse volcanic alpine desert, dramatic ridges and glacial terrain before you stand on the Roof of Africa.

Unlike shorter itineraries, the 7-day Machame Route follows the recommended “climb high, sleep low” principle. Its gradual ascent lets your body adjust naturally to the altitude, which raises summit success rates noticeably and leaves you more time to enjoy Kilimanjaro’s stunning scenery.

At Ceraa Eyes Safari, seasoned mountain guides, trained cooks and committed porters all pull together so your climb is safe, enjoyable and well supported toward the top. Veteran trekkers and newcomers to high altitude will both find this itinerary suits them, striking a sound balance between adventure, comfort and acclimatization.

Itinerary

An early pick-up from Arusha, Moshi, Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) starts the day. You then drive to Machame Gate (1,800 m) and, once registered inside Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, start trekking through lush rainforest. Giant trees, colourful birds, blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys all thrive here.

Through dense tropical forest the trail climbs gently, and your professional mountain guide explains Kilimanjaro's distinctive ecology, volcanic past and wildlife. At Machame Camp (3,000 m) your mountain crew has comfortable tents waiting. As the sun sets you enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, then spend your first night beneath the stars.

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Distance: 11 km
Accommodation: Machame Camp

The rainforest falls away behind you and the scenery shifts sharply to giant heather and open moorland. The trail offers superb views of Mount Meru, the Shira Plateau and the soaring slopes of Kibo Peak.

Higher up, you notice distinctive alpine plants such as giant lobelias and everlasting flowers. At Shira Camp (3,840 m), you can enjoy fine sunset views while your guides do a health check and prepare you for the next stage of the climb.

Hiking Time: 4–6 Hours
Distance: 5 km
Accommodation: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This is a rest day for acclimatisation, so your body gets longer to settle before the higher ground. Once breakfast is done, you hike over the lovely Shira Plateau to Shira Cathedral, among the most striking volcanic rock formations anywhere on Kilimanjaro.

All through the hike you enjoy sweeping views of Kibo Peak, glaciers, volcanic valleys and the wilderness beyond. You then return to Shira Camp for lunch and a rest, and spend another peaceful night beneath one of Africa’s most spectacular starry skies.

Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours
Accommodation: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This hike ranks among the most valuable for acclimatisation. You ascend steadily to the striking Lava Tower (4,630 m), crossing dramatic alpine desert with incredible panoramic views.

Following lunch near Lava Tower, you drop down to Barranco Camp (3,960 m) in line with the tried-and-tested “climb high, sleep low” approach. This helps your body adjust to the altitude and noticeably improves your odds of reaching Uhuru Peak. Barranco Camp is also among the most scenic camps on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Hiking Time: 6–8 Hours
Distance: 10 km
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

You start by climbing the well-known Barranco Wall, a thrilling scramble that needs no technical skills, with our experienced mountain team guiding you carefully the whole way. From the top you are rewarded with sweeping panoramas of glaciers, valleys and the southern flanks of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The trail goes on across rolling alpine terrain to Karanga Camp (4,035 m). You spend the afternoon resting, drinking lots of water and getting ready for the final ascent, while another memorable sunset spreads over the mountain.

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Distance: 5 km
Accommodation: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Following breakfast you trek to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the last base camp prior to the summit. After an early dinner and a few hours of rest, the midnight ascent begins beneath a star-filled sky.

You reach Stella Point first and press on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Up here you can watch a memorable sunrise above the clouds and celebrate standing at the top of Africa. When the photographs are done, you walk down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for your last night on the mountain.

Hiking Time: 11–15 Hours
Distance: 17 km
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Wake in the calm of the rainforest and have your last breakfast on Mount Kilimanjaro. You then walk down lovely forest trails, full of birdsong and tropical plants, to Mweka Gate.

Here you are handed your official Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate and mark your success alongside the mountain crew. After that a driver takes you to Arusha, Moshi, JRO (Kilimanjaro International Airport) or Arusha Airport (ARK).

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Distance: 10 km
