01Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park lies at the foot of Africa's tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro, and ranks among the most visited of Kenya's national parks. It offers the picture-postcard image of Africa. Across rolling savannah, the pink-tinged, snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, 5,896 metres high, towers over everything. Beneath that grand backdrop wander great herds of elephants, together with lions, buffalos, cheetahs, giraffes, baboons, gazelles, hippos and wildebeest. More than 400 bird species live here too, alongside every sort of reptile, plant and animal.

03Day 3 – Journey from Amboseli across to the national park at Lake Nakuru
Enjoy breakfast at the lodge, then leave and drive towards the Great Rift Valley, pausing at a viewpoint on the way, and reach the pink lake, so called because of the great masses of flamingos. You check in at the Cliff Nakuru and have lunch. Afterwards a game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park shows you many animals. On it you will see huge numbers of flamingos gathered along the shore. Besides the birdlife for which Lake Nakuru is so famous, the park shelters many other species, including lions, leopards, black rhinos, white rhinos, buffalos, Rothschild's giraffes, zebras, impalas and waterbucks. Dinner and the night are at the Cliff Nakuru or similar.

Lions are plentiful across the Mara, as are elephants, giraffes, various gazelles and zebras. Cheetahs and leopards turn up regularly, and rhinos less often. From July to September the Mara hosts the annual wildebeest migration, one of the few great wildlife spectacles left, so big game and their predators should be abundant during your trip. The reserve also holds several species of bee-eater, the flying rainbows at the top of the Mara's bird list. Besides wildlife, the Masai Mara is home to many members of the colourful Masai people, who may be seen around the park's boundaries.

You spend the whole day at the Crater and carry a picnic lunch. It is the largest intact, unflooded caldera in the world, created by a colossal volcanic eruption. From the lodge you drive down through the lush rainforest on the rim, 610m to the grassland floor, which covers about 260 square kilometres. Wildebeest, zebras, elands and gazelles live here all year, together with Africa's densest lion population. Elephants, mountain bucks, buffalos, hyenas, wild dogs, leopards and cheetahs shelter in the forests. You spend the day watching wildlife and crossing the crater floor, stopping for a picnic on the grass among grazing herds. Dinner and the night are at Acacia Farm.
